How to bake bread from scratch – with pictures (Ooh.. Lucky you!)
Duration: About 3 hours
Wash your hands thoroughly, and ensure that you have a nice large clean counter in front of you.
Put on an apron .If you’re anything like me, you’re going to get covered in flour

Grab a nice big bowl, mine is purple and select your flour. You can use plain flour. I have decided to use some gourmet Sweet Bun Mix Flour.
Measure out 500g of flour
Sift flour into the large bowl
Measure out 10g of yeast (always store this in a fridge or freezer), and 10g of Sea Salt (I used Lake Salt) and add to flour.
Make a well in the dry mixture. Measure out 350ml of water. (I used 225ml’s as I was using a special flour).
Mix in well.
Spread a light layer of flour on the counter. Take dough and place on counter over flour. If your mixture is too runny, add more flour, if it’s not holding together – add more water.
Knead with knuckles and palms of hands. Flatten and stretch. Turn over and repeat until it is well mixed.
Knead with throwing pressure. This is how we get the air into the dough. This step should take between 15 – 40 minutes. I usually take about 25-30 min. It’s an amazing way to work up a sweat, so avoid long sleeves for this stage.
The best thing about having a dog is not having to clean the floor after making bread 🙂 Thanks Benny – despite nearly tripping over you on numerous occassions.
Place in a large bowl, or a tray and put in a warm spot (In summer, you can place it anywhere.. in winter, I place it in front of my heater). Cover it, and leave it for an hour to grow.
Remove from container, place on bench, and fold repeatedly to strengthen the bonding of the bread. Place back under cover in a warm spot for another hour.
Preheat Oven to 250 degrees celcius
Remove bread from dish/bowl. Place onto a pizza stone (if you have one, I don’t- sad face), otherwise place on a flat tray.
Bake bread for about 20 minutes, or until bread has a nice brown crust on it. The type of flour you use will affect the depth of the colour.
